For those of you who don’t know of the wonderful, bizarre world that inhabits The Lounge Kittens, please, please allow us to introduce you! The Lounge Kittens are an all-female, three-piece covers band who reinvent classic pop and rock bangers as smooth, sophisticated lounge-style chill tunes which want to light a ‘40s cigarette holder and sip whiskey on a chaise lounge. While it might sound a little off the wall, what this band is up to at the minute is actually pretty cool, not to mention important- and it’s about time we all realised why.
Okay, yes, it’s true, the cutesy-pop, wink-wink “hello, sailor!” vibe might conjure images of Christina Aguilera’s ‘Lollipop’ video, all short skirts, sexy dance moves and tongue-in-cheek innuendos. But put that to one side, because The Lounge Kittens deliver so much more than just superficial style. What attracts us to them is much rather their charisma than their cleavage; it’s their voices, not their outfits, bodies or sexuality. Having three ultra-talented women fearlessly take on some of the biggest belters in music on their own social media channels is easily enough to blow any silly notions of preconceptions out of the water.
Not only do The Lounge Kittens have the ability to shatter assumptions about women in the music industry by bucking the expected approach, but they also use their music as a platform to express yet another route of performance that women could be seen to struggle with, perhaps the only one to rival the music industry- comedy. With their music videos, The Lounge Kittens aren’t afraid to take the piss out of their contemporaries, often parodying the original artists’ video with a suave, not-so-subtle style. They face the likes of comedy and music, both respecting and sending up others along their way, without fear, obstacle or oppression.
The Lounge Kittens have probably reworked a wicked cover of your favourite rock song at one point or another, but that isn’t even the best thing about them. The best thing about The Lounge Kittens is that they open up a world where raw talent, soulful performance and comedic value is open to everyone, no matter what.
