A brief history of Green Day

Chapter One: Sweet Children

In the late ‘80s a plucky guitarist and his mischievous best friend decided they were fed up of high school and thought, hey, maybe starting a band will be more fun. They weren’t wrong! Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt, like most other teenagers in their neighbourhood, only had their parents’ garage to practise in, but that didn’t stop them. Along with original drummer John Kiffmeyer (that’s a name for the old school fans!) they formed Sweet Children, with music inspired by local punk bands Operation Ivy and Bad Religion. The threesome signed almost immediately to Lookout! Records, an independent Californian label. Armed with a new label- and a new name- Green Day were born with their debut album 39/Smooth in 1990.
